The people know that the spring was here long before the city was, that it flowed long before it was known by human eyes, before they built their feeble house of stone upon it and called it a well. It was here before the country was named, perhaps even before the mountains were born. I don't know how long the spring has been here, perhaps forever. But I do know that for as long as the spring has existed, so have I. I am the Guardian, the Water Witch, Naiad, the Spirit of the Spring. They have many names for me, because they do not know my real name. No one does. Even the ones I bring down here to live with me.
I am the Spring, and the Spring is me. As long as the water flows, I live.
